The social-economic evolution (according to the data available on 30.06.2023).

  • The gross domestic product (GDP) ecreased by 2.4% in the first quarter of 2023. The consequences of the multiple crises that influenced the economy in the previous year keep economic activity on the decline.
  • The energy crisis, the war in the neighboring country, the increase in prices are the basic factors that continue to affect the industrial sector. In the months of January-April 2023, the industrial sector decreased by 6.2% compared to the same period in 2022.
  • The volume of agricultural production decreased. The decrease in agricultural production was determined by the decrease in production in the livestock sector of 4.9%, which in the first quarter occupies a share of 99% of the total volume of agricultural production.
  • The demand for transportation services continues to grow. In the first quarter of 2023, sales revenue in this sector increased by 45% in nominal terms and by 16% in real terms, including in March – by 19.3%.
  • Current crises keep investments on a downward trajectory. The decrease in foreign investments (-21.7%), investments financed by external credit and loans (-36.4%), as well as the own investments of economic agents (-10.9%) were the basic factors that influenced the decrease investments. At the same time, the investments financed from the national public budget, after the considerable decrease in 2022, registered an increase of 8.8%, being mainly directed to public infrastructure.
  • The inflation rate is moderate but remains at a high level. The annual inflation rate (May 2023 compared to May 2022) is 16.3%. At the same time, the Moldovan leu appreciated against the US dollar and the euro.
  • The first signals of the impact of monetary policy relaxation are attested. In the context of decreasing interest rates, the demand for loans increased.
  • Budget revenues keep growing. In January-May 2023, revenues in the amount of approximately 38.9 million were collected from the national public budget. lei, which represents a 15.8% increase compared to the similar period of 2022.
