Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu had a telephone conversation with Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Hassan Shoukry

October 15, 2023, Chisinau – Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu had a telephone conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Sameh Hassan Shoukry, with whom he discussed the situation of Moldovan citizens in the Gaza Strip.

Minister Nicu Popescu emphasized the importance of coordinating humanitarian efforts at the international level to ensure the safe evacuation of civilians, including Moldovan citizens, through the Rafah crossing point, from the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

“My counterpart assured me that ongoing negotiations are underway with all those involved, and that when circumstances permit, our consular representative will travel to Rafah to help evacuate Moldovan citizens from the Gaza Strip to Cairo, and later to the Republic of Moldova. In this sense, our diplomats provided the Egyptian authorities with the list of Moldovan citizens from the Strip who requested evacuation. When the evacuation corridors are approved, the Egyptian authorities will allow our citizens to enter. I was assured that the absence of a visa would not be a problem during transit through Egyptian territory.

Our diplomatic teams, especially the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in the State of Israel and the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Turkey, and by extension in Egypt, have constant conversations with the authorities of the countries of accreditation to assist citizens who need evacuation.” – mentioned Nicu Popescu.
